Hi all.
Jeffrey here.
“There’s No Choice” is this week’s puzzle title and we have “no choice” since the “or” in the theme answer phrases have been changed from a separate word to part of the first word as follows:
18a [It’s possible “The Simpsons” Quimby will decline to?] – “May or may not” becomes MAYOR MAY NOT.
28a [Gift for a Sunday sermonizer?] – “Past or present” becomes PASTOR PRESENT.
48a [Falsehoods about math divisors?] – “Fact or fiction” becomes FACTOR FICTION.
58a [Domingo, Carreras, Pavarotti, plus nine others?] – “Ten or twelve” becomes TENOR TWELVE. We add nine to the Three Tenors.
Canadian content:
24a [CBC panel hosted by Rosemary Barton] – AT ISSUE. A long running feature on “The National”, the daily newscast.
67a [The Y of the band abbreviated CSNY] – YOUNG. Neil Young, we’ve seen him here before.
1d [Train company name meaning “way”] – VIA. Via Rail, the Canadian equivalent to the U.S. Amtrak.
19d [Jaw opener in Saskatchewan?] – MOOSE. Moose Jaw is a city in Saskatchewan. I was there once but didn’t see any meese, uh mooses, uh moose.
46d [Spring sighting off Labrador] – ICEBERG. And how can you see an iceberg without hearing Canadian Celine Dion?
Rant of the Week:
44a [Neil Diamond’s “_____ Said”] – I AM. Some people have an issue (AT ISSUE?) with the lyric “I am, I said, to no one there. And no one heard at all, not even the chair, “ because why would a chair hear you? But I AM more perplexed by this verse:
Did you ever read about a frog
Who dreamed of bein’ a king
And then became one
Well except for the names
And a few other changes
If you talk about me
The story is the same one..
If you change the names and a few others things the story is NOT THE SAME ONE!! It is a different story now!!
End of rant
See you next week!
A more challenging puzzle this week. Didn’t get too far until I caught onto Barb’s clever theme! Loved solving it although I left a few blank squares!
Thanks for the comment, Brenda. Glad to know you’re still solving!
