Hi, FOBS (Fans of Barb]. This week we have a musical puzzle titled The New Genre-ation. The title made me think there is some sort of switching re for er but actually musical genres are being updated in song titles.

17a [Electronic remix of an Elton John hit?] – CROCODILE ROCK becomes CROCODILE TECHNO

27a [Dire Straits song with a gangsta vibe?] – SULTANS OF SWING becomes SULTANS OF RAP

45a [Tune from a 70s version of Chicago ?] – ALL THAT JAZZ becomes ALL THAT DISCO

59a [Song Johnny Cash performed for angsty inmates?] – FOLSOM PRISON BLUES becomes FOLSOM PRISON EMO

Theres a lot more music in this puzzle. Beyoncé, the Go-Gos, the Beach Boys, Abba and the Beatles also show up. Thats one heck of a concert!

Canadian content:

15a [Fox on the run?] – TERRY. In 1980, Terry Fox, despite losing a leg to cancer, started a cross-country run. He made it about halfway when the return of the cancer forced him to stop. He died at age 22. The Terry Fun Run is now held annually and has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for cancer research. A statute of Terry can be found just down the road from me at Mile 0 in Victoria, his intended destination.

53a [Words with and away ] UP UP. Up, Up and Away could be referring to the Grammy-winning song by the 5th Dimension, but I remember it as the home run call by Dave Van Horne, longtime broadcaster for the Montreal Expos.

29d [Bagotville bag] SAC . Bagotville is part of the town of La Baie, Quebec,

50d [To the left, on the Bluenose] APORT. The Bluenose was a celebrated racing ship. It can be seen on the Canadian dime.

Solving tip of the week:

Meaning of ?

A ? at the end of a clue, such as those in several clues listed above, usually means that something tricky is happening. The answer wont be a straight definition of the clue, but a wacky phrase, pun or the like.

This is Jeffrey wishing you happy solving. See you next week!
