Welcome to my fourth ClassiCanadianCrosswords blog. I hope you don’t think I’m 49 across yet.
The title is “Some Things Are Like That” and what three theme answers have in common is that 54a/70a – THEY’RE ALL WASHED UP.
20a [Beach find used for funky art] – DRIFTWOOD wash up on the shore
26a [Work crew with scalpels and sutures] – SURGICAL TEAMS wash up before they operate
49a [Once he was hot and now he’s not] – YESTERDAY’S MAN is a washed up individual
Canadian content:
15a [Vancouver Island town with a “clue” in its name] – UCLUELET is on the Pacific Ocean and I haven’t visited in quite a few years. This might be a good year to return as I stay close to home.
37a [‘80s rocker ____ Nova] – ALDO. He had a hit song called Fantasy. Other Montreal-born 80’s[ish] singers: Andy Kim, Men Without Hats, France Joli, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Leonard Cohen.
41a [Trade sch. In Edmonton] – NAIT -Northern Alberta Institute of Technology . A few weeks ago we saw: [Calgary trade sch.] SAIT – Southern Alberta. Be on the lookout for Red Deer’s CAIT – Central Alberta Institute of Technology (just kidding.)
7d [Angus ____ Institute] – REID is a polling and research organization.
35d [CTV anchor LaFlamme] – LISA. CTV is a major television network and Lisa LaFlamme is the chief anchor on the national news.
51 [ ____ Grégoire Trudeau] – SOPHIE is married to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Did you know?
An answer can be more than one word long. SPIT ON, THE MAFIA, A SMILE, A TWO, ONE BY ONE, I AM WOMAN are some examples.
This week’s puzzle seems to be a bit on the tougher side. If there are other answers you need explained just leave a comment and I’ll answer.
That’s all for this week. Wash your hands!
Hi Jeffrey,
Thanks for doing this blog. I must say I did find this week’s puzzle more difficult as I got hung up on what the 20a, 26a and 49a could possibly have in common? Very satisfying once I finally figured it out (but only by solving 70a). I particularly liked 32a too, very clever Barb!
