Hi all!
Jeffrey here. Thanks to Brian for filling in last week. I’m back just doing my job as weekly blogger.
“Just Doing My Job” is this week’s puzzle title and we have types of jobs that have become metaphors for specific types of people.
17a [Metaphor for a brainiac] – ROCKET SCIENTIST.
23a [Metaphor for a fussy tantrum-thrower] – PRIMA DONNA.
35a [Metaphor for a harsh, demanding boss] – SERGEANT MAJOR. I’m not sure if that is a higher rank than a modern Major-General.
50a [Metaphor for a money-grubbing lady] – GOLD DIGGER.
58a [Metaphor for a shady dealer] – USED CAR SALESMAN.
Canadian content:
20a [Arctic Cat competitor] – SKI-DOO. An iconic Canadian invention.
47a [Sioux Lookout ‘s prov.] – ONT. I’ve lived in Toronto but never been to Sioux Lookout. Ontario is big!
9d [Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. ____ Hinshaw] – DEENA. For future reference Dr. Bonnie Henry is British Columbia’s equivalent.
27d [“Barometer Rising” writer MacLennan] – HUGH. Wikipedia has this fun fact: “Crawley Films Limited of Ottawa bought the film rights to Barometer Rising by February 1962 with the intent of making a main-feature movie.” I guess it will be coming out any day now.
31d [Offshore prov.] – PEI. Prince Edward Island is an offshore island and a province. Vancouver Island is an offshore island but not a province. Montreal is on an island but not offshore or a province.
34d [Tegan’s twin partner in song] – SARA. Well they are twins everywhere else too.
53d [Tiger-Cats cornerback Jumal] – ROLLE. Not Canadian but playing for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL.
Tip of the Week
If you are really stuck, remember if the clue is plural the answer will be as well, and nearly always ends in an “S”. Sometimes just putting in that one letter can get you the crossing word and off you go!
See you next week!
Always look forward to Wednesdays and Barbara’s puzzle. There was one clue in “Just doing my job” and it left me clueless. Clue: results of swiping right; Answer: edates. I have no idea what that means. I looked up “edates” and got somewhat educated but no further enlightened about the clue. Now, mind you, I’m in my 72nd year and cluelessness regarding internet terms is increasing astronomically.
Could you clarify?
Thanks,
Peter
Hi Peter.
I don’t have personal experience with this, but it refers to when you are using your smart phone to look at photos on a computer dating site. If you see someone you are interested in, you use your finger to swipe toward the right of the screen. If you reject them as a potential match you swipe left. So you might get a date electronically , or e-date, by swiping right.
