Hi all.
Well, this week’s puzzle is titled “Going All Out.” It could also be called “In with the Out.” “Out” is added to a common word or phrase to create a new wacky phrase.
18a [DQ treat made with cheesy fries & gravy?] – P[OUT]INE CONE. Despite being from Montreal, I never was a fan of poutine.
24a [Wraparound skirt or kimono?] – [OUT]FIT TO BE TIED
36a [Scott Joplin’s musical tribute to stew?] – MAPLE LEAF RAG[OUT]. The Maple Leaf Rag doesn’t appear to have a Canadian connection despite named for our national symbol.
46a [Illness accompanying a growth spurt?] – SPR[OUT]ING FEVER. I think we’ve all heard enough about fevers.
54a [High fashion for the feet?] – PEDIC[OUT]URE
Canadian content:
17a [Pressurized fuel, for short] – LNG. Liquefied Natural Gas. Lots of talk about LNG in BC the last few years.
31a [Salmon also called chinook] – TYEE. Some nice Pacific salmon to go along with your poutine cone.
53a [Canadian cookie maker since 1892] – DARE. I didn’t eat poutine, but I loved Montreal-made Viau Whippets, a chocolate-covered marshmallow cookie. They are older than Oreos! Dare bought out Viau and a few months ago I rediscovered them. Still yummy!
Other stuff
4a [Burns Night dish that’s piped in] – HAGGIS. Add haggis to the list of stuff I don’t eat.
39d [Like a sore loser at a bullfight?] – GORED. Wow, this puzzle went dark all of a sudden.
46d [Dreamworks Princess of Power] – SHE-RA. Twin sister of He-Man.
Tip of the week
Other great Montreal food: bagels, smoked meat and rotisserie chicken. As always if you need more help just leave a comment.
favourite clue this week: Nips before tucks?
Enjoyed solving “Going All Out”. “Maple Leaf ragout “ haha!
I’m also from Montreal – went to Westmount High. My wife is from Hudson. Love those Montreal bagels!
Hi Gary. I went to Wagar High School.
I’m behind (though less than I have been) but LOVED “nips before tucks.”
